the title should say (ask) it already. But, here is the replay:
Is it possible to set up a virtual machine with for instance Ubuntu and run the 6990 hardware on that?
Thanks for your answers.
True, but this is hardly a workable solution since any PCI drivers can fail in the VM for a number of reasons with this. The Amazon EC2 cloud (which runs a modified Xen) offers physical machines, not VMs, for GPU cluster rental (seehttp://aws.amazon.com/ec2/instance-types/). If there was a way to slice GPU power within VMs, I would think Amazon would have done that.
Yes indeed, in fact I've done it and it works fine. Since GPU mining does not really impact the CPU and the memory, I have set up a machine running Ubuntu, a miner and VMWare player with my Windows Server as a VM (before the whole physical machine was dedicated to the Windows Server).

Free Mining Stats iPhone App
hey guys, Apple finally approved the app I was working on. It's posted now on the app store for free. It'll check the status of your miners on btc guild, slush, and deepbit. It'll also pop up and warn you if any workers becomes idle.

Best 6970 to Buy
Quick question. Out of all the vendors out there... Who makes the best 6970 that produces the most megahash. I have been using xfx 6950's for awhile but, wanted to see what your thoughts were before i upgraded to 6970's. Thanks.
I can't speak for others, but I stick with sapphire due to the performance and statistics of the first one I bought. They all are comparable to the first one in terms of P and S.
Here are my numbers (880(stock) Mhz core, 300(underclocked) Mhz memory, 45% fan speed set manually)
Temps solo - 60C (Max with no AC) 56C (max with AC)
Temps for multiple GPU, with a fan blowing in between the cards - 66C max - This is the hottest
Hashes per second - 370 MH/S completely stock
Overclocking, I was able to get a pretty big boost around 450 MH/S but that was at pretty risky settings that I would not advise running
Asus Direct CU II HD 6970 - it runs a mild 940/1375 overclock on stock voltages easily. Card remains completely stable for gaming or whatever. Temps stay at or below 85C with fan at 80%. Could probably be pushed further, especially if it wer run in an open case, but I like to keep the fan noise down.
You can use Asus SmartDoctor to change the voltages if you want to go all the way.
Main problem with it is that the card takes 3 slots (!), so don't plan on using more than three of them without extenders.

2x6970 rig runs extremely loud and hot
I have a dual 6970 rig that I just got. It runs incredibly loud and very hot, able to heat up a whole room very easily. Is there a way I could step down the fan speeds so it doesn't sound like a WWII-era fighter plane?
I'm on Ubuntu by the way.
Try this :
to get fan speed for card 0
export DISPLAY=:0.0; aticonfig --pplib-cmd "get fanspeed 0"
to get fan speed for card 1
export DISPLAY=:0.1; aticonfig --pplib-cmd "get fanspeed 0"
to set fan speed for card 0 to 50%
export DISPLAY=:0.0; aticonfig --pplib-cmd "set fanspeed 0 50"

hd 6950 crazy temps ?
just started mining today ...(and yes i know dont start !!! but im still going to do it
i got two xfx hd6950's using phoenix or guiminer the temps are very hot 102c on one card and 92c on the other and im only getting about
240 mh/s out of them most disappointing
catalyst 11.5 drivers
app sdk (stream sdk) 2.4
windows 7 x64
any ideas chaps ?!?! as i was looking to overclock and push these to the max...currently they suck ! lol cheers onis_uk
Hmm I dont know.. I've only been in the game for about a week. I don't have AC in my house and hits hot here. but I still can keep them under 80 degrees fully overclocked usually. I do have big fans on them though. I use linuxcoin though. Has everything you need for the linux noob to get up and running. All can be run from a USB drive.
I have 8 visiontek 6950's
Yea, I have a HIS 6970 that runs @65C idle and jumps to 90C+ within 10 seconds of mining.
I believe it may have to do with poor thermal paste from the factory.
I'm going to scrape the junk off and apply some real arctic silver.
Maybe that will help.
While I'm not certain of your issues, I too have a pair of 6950's running, so maybe my setup will offer you some insight:
One card is current slotted in the top, the other card in the bottom slot, with an empty slot in between them for better airflow. The bottom slot only offers PCIe x8, but this is perfectly fine for both mining and gaming.
Catalyst 11.1 drivers
Stream SDK 2.1
Win 7 64-bit
I'm using a PCI output fan directly above my top GFX card to pull heat out of the case and prevent heat exchange between the GFX and CPU. Additionally I am using a AeroCool Shark 140mm case fan as an intake fan bringing in air directly onto the GFX cards from the side of my case, where there is about a foot of open space before a wall. My case does have front intake fans and top output fans but they run at very low speeds and don't really effect GFX temps due to their positioning.
The room in which my PC runs is kept between 20-23C (68-73F) at all times.
I use the -f60 flag on both of my cards, giving them 98% utilization.
